Werner Herzog made this documentary not as a biography, but as a celebration and showcase of the work of the French couple, famous for their pioneering volcano photography, a dangerous craft that ultimately cost them their lives
It’s pleasantly unpretentious: we see excerpts from their (still stunning) work alongside small, incidental shots of the filmmakers themselves, and Herzog gives us a quiet commentary more from the perspective of a fan than an expert (although, of course, he knows something of what he’s talking about).
It may seem boring and pedestrian, but the stunning images will captivate you and make you admire those who dared to film them
If there’s a tragic dimension (did they continue to take risks, because at the end of the day, they did), Herzog doesn’t delve into it.
