This feels authentic
Synopsis
During the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, an American sportscasting crew must adapt to live coverage of Israeli athletes being held hostage by a terrorist group. I love authentic historical dramas. Especially from the eras I lived in. It’s a story I’m familiar with and have seen told in various film formats over the years.
And metaphorical to the extreme
As stated in the title above, I found this story to be the most compelling of all. I saw Spielberg’s Munich in the theater years ago and I still remember thinking it was a bit long and bloated. Even boring, I hate to say it. This version of events is more tense, the running time of the film is shorter, and time flies in the film and lives are at stake.
Plus, the airtime
You’re in the control room of ABC’s Wide World of Sports when the tragic terrorist events during the 1972 Olympics in Germany unfold. Cigarettes are smoked. Rotary phones are used for communication. And a serious crisis is unfolding in the Olympic Village.
But history is never pretty
It’s a good history lesson for Generation Z. I think it’s also good for elementary and high school history, but it’s not for children under 17, so no. John Magaro and Ben Chaplin shine brighter with their stellar performances. It’s worth going to the movies.
They might learn a little bit about history
It wouldn’t be a bad idea to take your high school kids to the theater to see this show. Then they’ll come away with you and ask: Did this really happen?
