Of course, if you’re over thirty-five
Synopsis
The Chinese girl lives in silence for herself, celebrating the auspicious Belle Epoque with song and dance. The main character doesn’t speak a single line of dialogue throughout the film. Have you ever bought a band’s album and instead of new material, found that it’s just old B-sides, remixes, and a few new songs that provide added value? Jia Zhang-ke’s “Caught by the Tides” is in many ways just that. But in doing so, it makes a statement about his career and the changing face of the world around him.
She follows him for years and all over the country
Qiao Qiao (Zhao Tao) romances Guao Bin (Zhubin Li), but he moves on, with Qiao Qiao following him. But when she gets there, maybe what she wants isn’t for her. But in reality, the plot doesn’t matter, because most of it has already been written and filmed over the years; now it’s been repurposed. Fragments of works such as “Unknown Pleasures”; (2002), “Still Life”; (2006) and “Mountains May Go”; (2015), if I remember correctly. This allows for a realistic portrayal of the timeline of both leads and their uneven aging.
It’s more of a series of vignettes than a well-constructed work
The scenes are therefore different but very familiar, providing a sort of retrospective of Jia’s work, in a more direct and better executed way than Takeshi Kitano attempted in “Takeshis”. (2005). The problem with creating a film in this way is that while it works perfectly as a narrative film, sticking to what you already have makes it feel a bit awkward in terms of flow. After watching a lot of the film, the fragments are meant to resemble the original script, so it doesn’t feel like one story, but different stories glued together. But there are a few nice coincidences that materialize and allow Jia’s message to come across as one you need to meet.
Jia is very playful in his take on technology
Text messages on an old Nokia become TikTok videos on a new smartphone. TikTok fame is more for cheap publicity than actual fame and fortune; and service robots can easily be mistaken for simple question-asking. Technology has played an interesting role in shaping the nature of human relationships, especially over the last twenty years. If you’re familiar with Jia’s work, you’ll immediately recognize what’s going on here. However, if you’re coming to his work fresh, it can seem like a slightly odd film that doesn’t quite flow together nicely.
Although it may feel like they’re watching “Still Life” all over again
Some scenes don’t seem to fit; more have been added as they become available. So it may require a bit of background work for the uninitiated, and that’s another thing for long-time fans. Has life gone on for the past eighteen years?Politic1983.home.blog.
