The first Indian film to win the prestigious Grand Prix at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival
Synopsis
In Mumbai, nurse Prabha’s routine is disrupted when she receives an unexpected gift from her estranged husband. Her younger roommate, Anu, tries in vain to find a place in the city where she can be intimate with her boyfriend. Everything We Imagine as Light tells the story of Prabha, a nurse living in Mumbai.
Anu is young and everything that Prabha is not
She is reserved and married, but her husband is estranged because he has moved to Germany for work. She has a roommate, Anu, also a nurse at the hospital, and Anu is in a secret relationship with Shiaz. Anu is aware of the challenges of an interfaith relationship, but for now their love is pure.
All three women have their own challenges and different outlooks on life
Prabhas is closer to Parvathy, he cooks at the hospital and a powerful builder is trying to tear her down and will throw her out of the house. The film tries to capture those few days of their lives as they face their reality. Payal Kapadia, an impressive director, narrates a grounded story, keeping the story around her three wives.
The way she is reserved and quickly breaks off a likely relationship was excellent
The choice of the lot will be Prabha Kani Kusruti and she effectively portrays her longing for her estranged husband. There is also Divya Prabhu’s Anu who yearns for a private space where she can be intimate with her partner, and it is not just sex, but also the initial phase of their love story, building trust with each other. The third story with Chhaya Kadam as Parvathy sticks to the harsh reality and her return to the village.
But it was the last act where Prabha finds her end, so beautifully executed
There were a few deep moments that have a subtle tone without becoming melodramatic like that scene where Prabha apologizes to Anu. Overall, strong performances elevate this story and it was worth watching in the theatre.
