A unique profile of British pop superstar Robbie Williams. The film was created from director Michael Gracie’s extensive recordings of interviews with Robbie Williams over a year and a half at Williams' recording studio in Los Angeles, USA. Although the interviews were not originally for the film, as Gracie “just wanted to capture [Williams] in his own voice telling his story,” most of Williams' the commentary in the film is from these recordings.. (2024).
still not enough
This movie is not what I expected. In a Robbie Williams biopic, one would expect colour, theatrics, music and dance, and this film does not disappoint with its flamboyance. But while smaller biopics take you on a journey between hit artists, this film takes you on a journey through the psyche of Robbie Williams as he tries to come to terms with getting everything he’s ever wanted but feels like… The film moves at breakneck speed and there are very few moments where the film stops breathing, but it’s a credit to Michael Gracie and his team that the film still packs a powerful emotional punch.
Jono Davies is fantastic as Robbie, capturing his movements and eccentricities perfectly
The Weta team should also be commended for their incredible work in turning his performance into a chimpanzee that symbolizes how Robbie sees himself (a playful monkey, less evolved than those around him). Raechelle Banno plays Nicole Appleton (from All Saints) and gives an emotional performance as Robbie’s fiancee. Her dance performance and the montage of their meeting is truly one of the highlights of the film. Steve Pemberton is perfect as Robbie’s father – the man who made him what he has become in the worst possible way.
The film benefits greatly from being an independent film
It’s like the story Michael Gracie really wanted to tell. Sex, drugs and rock and roll are exposed in all their grotesque glory. Robbie Williams himself is to be greatly commended for allowing the film to lay all its flaws and faults at the feet of the audience. He does not perform well for much of the film and the film is strengthened by his honesty with the audience.
His singing and voice work were also exceptional
This film is bombastic and in your face for almost the entire duration, but like the man it captures, there is a sensitive soul beneath the brashness. This is the best movie of the year, a visual and aural feast. I hope he gets the success he deserves.
